Dear Janet,Thank you for visiting AskPatty.com. The 2008 Prius anticipated release will be Fall of 2007. I would be cautious on purchasing a rental vehicle because they usually have a rougher life in a short period of time than a previously owned personal vehicle. Following is an article that discusses purchasing a rental vehicle:
Used-UpFinally, some 1- and 2-year-old used cars on dealers' lots are former rental cars. Rental cars generally get considerable use and abuse in a short time, so they may not be good choices. Some leased vehicles may offer a better alternative. Leasing companies carefully inspect the vehicles before they put them up for sale. People who lease are charged for all necessary repairs. This policy encourages people who lease vehicles to take care of them.Updated on 9/6/06 Good Luck, Marnie KramerEverything Carz

Check out our expert answers regarding rental cars. I think you need to be careful when buying a rental car.
As far as 2007 versus 2008, that again is up to you. The new 2008 Prius is supposed to be released this fall. Remember, a new model year will be more expensive than a certified pre-owned or even a new 2007 that is sitting on the lot, though it is not likely that a 2007 Prius was ever left sitting.
Here is a good link with consumer's opinions on 2007 Prius vehicles:
The 2008 hasn't been release quite yet so finding Consumer's reviews will be difficult until there are some on the road.
My suggestion with this particular vehicle is to go to a large Toyota dealership that gets a lot of inventory so they will have a lot of choices and likely better prices on the vehicles. Also, I would advise you to go toward the end of the month when dealers are trying to clear out inventory.
Hope this helps and good luck!
