I have a 2000 Mazda Protege which just starting to make a whinning noise when I first start the car from a cold start which is loud. When I start driving the car it still makes a whinning noise (plus there is a sort of a sweet smell coming from my vents) but it gets quiter but it doesn\*t completely goes a way. I know that it\*s not a fan belt because it a sounds different. Please give me some advice as to what it may be?

Paul,
The sweet smell coming from your vents is more than likely indicating a coolant leak. Coolant smells just like sugary kool aid, but it is extremely dangerous if ingested. Without hearing the noise, it's hard to say what it is. However, that it occurred at the same time the smell started, I would take a guess that your water pump may be going bad.
