I have a 2001 Chrysler Sebring LX. The A/C works off and on, most of the time only on MAX and then at times when I am at a stop light the car makes a loud whining noise but only when the A/C is on.
What could this be?
It sounds like you may have a problem with your compressor. The whining noise may be the belt trying to turn on the compressor pulley. Sometimes the compressors seize or the bearing goes for the pulley.
This could also be the reason that you don't always get cold air, especially if the blower is blowing air on the other speeds and not only on Max.
You should take it to an ASE certified shop or dealership and get it looked at before more damage happens. Hope this helps.
