My 2003 pt cruiser stopped running in the middle of the freeway. Sent it to the Chrysler dealership and they stated I need to replace timing belt tensioner, idler pulley, water pump gasket and flush the cooling system. They gave me estimate worse case scenario $1295.00 maybe less but not more. What do you think?
It sounds like your timing belt broke while you were driving. If there was no damage to the engine then usually replacing a timing belt and water pump would run you around $500-$700. Add another $100 at the most for the coolant flush, I'm not sure why they're telling you $1200.
They may be anticipating some bent valves or other damaged parts since the belt broke while the engine was running. Don't be afraid to ask them how they came up with that price and what they think they'll have to replace.
