Edmunds.com says Toyota FJ Cruiser needs Premium gas, dealer says "no" takes Regular. Is this true and will mileage be as good with Regular gas?

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Patty Streeter, at AskPatty.com Always follow the fuel requirements in the owners manual suggested by the manufacture. The Toyota FJ Cruiser requires: The label on the FJ Cruiser fuel door states that Premium Unleaded Fuel Only is required. As the Owner's manual states " select Premium Unleaded gasoline (91 octane or higher) for optimum engine performance". However, Regular Unleaded fuel with a minimum octane rating of 87 is acceptable. The VOAS guide, brochure and website, show a rating of 239 hp, which was achieved using Premium Unleaded fuel. Please note that this rating may be reduced with the use of non-premium fuel. It is a high compression engine and gets the best engine performance and longest engine life span using premium fuel. This engine was designed for premium fuel and to use regular will degrade engine performance and the lifetime of the engine.
