Can I maintain the warranty by taking my new car to a certified mechanic and have all work done within the warranty deadlines? Can I get a trailer hitch installed that isn't the manufacturer's hitch and maintain the warranty?

Pru,
You can definitely have work done by a certified mechanic and still maintain your warranty. Congress passed a law in 1975 titled Magnusen-Moss Warranty Act which states that consumers can have their warranties maintained while having their vehicle serviced/maintained at an independent repair facility. However, independents are not able to perform manufacturers warranties.
Google "Magnusen-Moss Warranty Act" to read the entire law for yourself.
Depending on the tow rating of your vehicle, having an aftermarket trailer hitch installed could void your warranty. I suggest checking your owner's manual and go from there.
I hope this helps!
