I would like to buy a Mini Cooper but the nearest dealer is 60 miles away. They said that they have to maintain it or else I will void the warranty - even for oil changes! Should I buy a used one close to home and not worry about having a dealer maintain it?
They are wrong about this. If it's the new car warranty, it goes with the vehicle and you can repair it at any Mini dealer. If it is an extended warranty, find out what company it is and you can probably find out where it is accepted via the internet.

I called a few MINI dealerships and they told me that with the factory warranty will be voided if you take it to any service shop that is not an authorized MINI dealer. So if you take it an ASE certified shop that specializes in foreign cars or MINIs, MINI will void your factory warranty.
Our expert is not wrong in that you can take it to ANY MINI dealer you want. It doesn't have to be the one you purchase it from, but it does need to be a dealer.
You can call some of the local BMW dealers, because some of those dealers will service MINIs (they are the same company), otherwise you need ot keep it at a MINI delaer.
I hope that helps you with your decision. Good luck!
