My check engine light has been on for quite a while, I went to the honda dealership and they said that I needed to replace my catalytic convertor as well as my timing belt, I went to a trusted mechanic and he replaced my timing belt and tole me that I should hold off on the catalytic convertor becuase it does not afffect drivability and since I have a low income that when it comes time for a smog check his friend can help out with the situation. Seeing the check engine light on is manking me nervous but I don't have a big budget to replace the catalytic convertor. Do you think I should replace it and how important is the catalytic convertor I heard that it has something to do with regulating smog.
You are right, the catalytic converter does work to reduce pollutants from
your vehicle's exhaust and your mechanic is also correct it does not in most
cases does not effect drivability. The problem with not replacing your vehicles
catalytic converter is that annoying check engine light is always on and you not
be aware when another problem arises. Your vehicle is probably newer than a 1996
model year and will require a factory Honda catalytic converter, depending on
which state you register your vehicle there are recertified converters available
that are less expensive but are not legal for use in some states.
