The service engine light of my 2002 Ford Escape has been on for a few weeks. I have not noticed any drivability issues with the car. I took it in to an AutoZone retailer for their free diagnostic test and was advised to replace the EGR valve. I called my dealer and got an outrageous quote to fix this valve and that they do not accept outside tests. The AutoZone worker said this is a very simple repair that anyone can do. Should I try and replace it myself? How long can I go without replacing this valve?

I suggest going to an ASE Blue Seal certified repair center for another opinion, sometimes cheaper is not always better.
