What are the effects of overfilling motor oil by 1/2 quart (Honda Civic) and what do you recommend to do?

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Patty Streeter, at Debbie - Ovefilling the engine oil can cause the engine to run rough at higher rpms and could also cause engine oil leaks. You should have the engine oil drained to the proper level. If you wanted to drain it, you could make sure the car is cooled down and undo the drain plug under the vehicle and let a little bit drain out. However, it is a little tricky to get the drain plug back in, once the oil starts coming out and you will probably get messy. The other option is to pump it out, but you will need to take it to an ASE certified repair center or your local Honda Dealership to have that done.
