My 1998 Saturn L1 makes a ticking sound when the engine is running. It sounds liek it is coming from more on teh driver's side of the engine than the passengar's. If I push on the gas, the ticking just gets faster, though not really louder. My husband described it as sounding like a motor boat. What do you think might be the issue?

had timing belt & water pump changed then changed garages. new guy checked belt & pump. they are OEM parts. new guy says belt & pump could not have been changed. they are OEM parts & OEM parts for a subaru just don't exist 7 years after the car was made. new guy says the 'job' (replacing belt & pump) was a put on. could he be right? if so, i'm out $358!!! ...
