North Chicago, IL – Great Lakes Credit Union (GLCU) has won First Place in the state Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award competition in the $500 million - $1 billion asset category and First Place in the Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award competition in the more than $500 million asset category as recently announced by the Illinois Credit Union League.
The Dora Maxwell Award recognizes credit unions that demonstrate the credit union philosophy of “People Helping People” and honors the work of credit unions for external activities in the community. While GLCU participates in community events year-round, the Dora Maxwell award limits entries to one extraordinary project with well-defined, measurable goals. GLCU’s submission for 2013 involved its dedication of staff and resources towards the annual Giving Dinner held in November at the Greenbelt Cultural Center in North Chicago. In partnership with the Lake County Forest Preserve District for the past 4 years, GLCU conducts a warm clothing drive leading up to the event and then staffs the event with GLCU volunteers who serve a warm holiday meal to approximately 300 low-income and homeless individuals who are encouraged to attend by local missions and shelters.
The Desjardins Award recognizes leadership among credit unions on behalf of youth financial literacy. During 2012, Great Lakes Credit Union continued increasing their presence in local classrooms conducting 35 youth financial education events reaching 2,019 students. GLCU’s youth Ambassador Club continued to meet quarterly to provide insight on best practices to educate young adults when it comes to financial services. GLCU again hosted youth financial education events during the Federal Reserve Bank’s Money Smart Week™ and joined credit unions around the country in participating in National Youth Savings Week with the theme “’Stache Your Cash.”
GLCU will now compete against each state’s first place entry at the national level for both awards.
