Ask Patty CEO has HUMMER off road experience in Durango Colorado

Published Jun 25th 2007, 2:51pm by

Gmc2007061549498_pv I want to thank the team at General Motors and Hummer for inviting me to experience the new H2 and H3 Alpha in Durango Colorado recently.  The experience was eye opening and the capabilities of the vehicles exceeded my wildest expectations.  I have always been a big fan of the H2 and I did not think that there was much they could do to improve it but the 08 has an updated interior with full curtain air bags, a six speed transmission that will improve fuel economy and a more powerful engine with increased towing capacity up to over 8000 pounds.

The day began in Durango, CO, driving about an hour to New Mexico to an off road mountain course.  Hummer is one of the supporters of the Tread Lightly! and the location has been developed as place for off roading to use and even with the wide stance of the H2 we did not infringe on any of the desert plants.

Tread Lightly! is a nonprofit organization offering a variety of tools to help arm recreationists and the industries that serve them with essential outdoor ethics.  Our mission is to proactively protect recreation access and opportunities in the outdoors through education and stewardship initiatives.

Gmc2007061549768_pv2 The event allowed us the opportunity to see what these vehicles can really do and there were a number of times I had white knuckles as I went down some of the rock faces.  These vehicles truly have maintained the characters of their military namesake but have all the creature comforts of their Cadillac relatives.  Hummer has done a masterful job of bringing together the strengths and capabilities of the original Hummer H1 and the comforts of a Cadillac to deliver a vehicle that can get you through any obstacle in style and comfort.

During the event the temperature hit over 100 in the desert but inside the Hummers with the air conditioning and leather seats it was like taking a Sunday drive, as I drove over boulders, up and down steep rock faces nothing seamed to phase these vehicles.  The most remarkable thing was the vehicles ability to go up what seamed like a vertical rock face with not a problem, keep in mind that the H2 weighs over 8000 pounds.

The Rock Garden Trail we drove is located 12 miles from Aztec, NM in San Juan County. The trailhead is located on off of SR 173, a little over 12.5 miles off of US 550. The area is relatively flat, at around 6,000 feet, but contains huge hills of slick rock throughout, similar to that found in the Moab, UT area. The Rock Garden itself is more of a four-wheel playground than a trail. There are several difficult obstacles throughout the area which you experienced, however, most have bypasses, which allow this trail to be rated "moderate". The trail is less than 3 miles round trip.

In my next post I will tell you about the H3, and my surprise.
