I am looking to purchase this car for my son from a dealership. The Carfax report shows an accident in May of 2012, but it gives no details of the extend of the damage or repair records following the accident. Everything else looks good. (see below) Is there a way to find out what damage was done? The dealer has no information other than the carfax report. And do you think its wise to purchase the car without knowing? Total Loss No total loss reported to CARFAX. Structural Damage No structural damage reported to CARFAX. Airbag Deployment No airbag deployment reported to CARFAX. Odometer Check No indication of an odometer rollback. Accident / Damage Accident reported on 05/21/2012

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Georgia Brown, Director of Education at National Independent Automobile Dealers Association (NIADA) You might use the website www.autocheck.com using the car's VIN number. Sometime more details are given--if they are available. Also, ask your mechanic to look it over. Regardless what car you consider, find a reliable mechanic to look at the car. They see a lot if cars and know the ones that may have issues--wrecked or not. Good luck!

Julie Kimes, General Sales Manager at O'Daniel Automart / O'Daniel Mazda I would personally recommend you take the Vehicle that you are considering purchasing to your OWN Technician. Also, ask the dealership to speak to the previous owner. CarFax is not a save all, many vehicles have been in accidents and were properly repaired. But how the car was maintained is just as important as any accident that was reported. Your technician will be able to point out both with an inspection. You don't want to end up with someone else's problems. Here is a link from CNN pointing out the dangers. Hope it helps! http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/11/us/auto-repair-investigation/index.html
