When I start the my 2008 VW beetle in the morning, a red picture shows up on the dash board that looks like a small flag in water. What does it mean? Am I at risk to drive the car before I get the symbol checked out? Is it the oil or some other fluid indicator?
I do believe that you may be talking about your low coolant light, this may be a simple remedy by topping off your coolant reservoir to the Full line and marked on the jug.

This is the temperature indicator on your vehicle. It means there is a problem with the cooling system, and should be addressed immediately. Overheating the engine could cause catastrophic problems. Get it to a shop ASAP.

Sounds like the temperature light. Check the antifreeze in the radiator, make sure it's full & it'll probably need to be looked at by a mechanic.
