I started smelling a strong chemical odor in my car. Took it to my mechanic and he said that the air conditioning evaporator was leaking and needed to be replaced. They disconnected so that it wouldn't come into the car. Cost estimate to replace is $900 because they have to remove the inside dash. Is that correct? Have been driving without ac but I live in Florida so it's getting pretty uncomfortable.

Amanda J. Pierce, MBA Jane, The average parts and labor rate per hour is around $900. It can be an extensive process to remove and access the evaporator.
