What would cause the computer to go bad? My husband was driving the vehicle and it started running rough while stopped at a red light. A loud noise was followed by the vehicle shutting off. He was not able to restart it. We had it towed to a local shop who said something shorted out and damaged the computer, requiring replacement. I have never heard this before. And would you recommend a computer replacement be handled by a dealer rather than an independent?

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Amanda J. Pierce, MBA Trish, Yes, it is possible for the ECU to fail, this can cause many drivability concerns that you mentioned. Always a good idea to obtain a second opinion when dealing with an ECU, you may be able to hook the diagnostic machine and flash ECU before a full replacement.
