What would cause the computer to go bad? My husband was driving the vehicle and it started running rough while stopped at a red light. A loud noise was followed by the vehicle shutting off. He was not able to restart it. We had it towed to a local shop who said something shorted out and damaged the computer, requiring replacement. I have never heard this before. And would you recommend a computer replacement be handled by a dealer rather than an independent?
Yes, it is possible for the ECU to fail, this can cause many drivability concerns that you mentioned. Always a good idea to obtain a second opinion when dealing with an ECU, you may be able to hook the diagnostic machine and flash ECU before a full replacement.
