Today while driving down the road, my 99 4 runner made a strange noise and then began to smell and put off a smoke or steam..not sure. Obviously I pulled over and turned off the vehicle. There was fluid leaking from underneath. When starting back up...it made a very noticeable noise while running..maybe knocking like. Any ideas on what this could be?
You may have a failed water pump, the sound that you hear could be from worn out vanes/bearings in your water pump. I suggest having the vehicle towed to a reputable repair facility. You can use our female friendly dealers and repair facilities to hopefully find one in your area.

Hi Jessica -
It sounds a bit like you overheated the engine. Did you notice if the temperature gauge went into the red?
If the engine is making noise like a knocking noise I would definitly not drive it at all and would get it towed instead to a reputable repair shop to get it checked out. It may be something smaller, but if the leak and steam was coolant - that knocking noise could be a sign of internal damage and you don't want to risk making it worse before getting it inspected.

Hello Jessica- It's hard to say without seeing it...but it sounds like you blew a head gasket ie the smoke/steam- if it started knocking chances are you may have serious engine damage- it's probably best to have it towed to a reliable shop or dealership & have them check it out- but this will probably be a expensive repair- sorry- hope this helps- thanks Super Girls Auto.
