What would you say about this, my car is a sc1 with over 219,000 miles. The engine runs fast when it is idling, should I just kick the gas pedal to slow the engine down or should I take it in for them to look at it? This just wastes gasoline. What could be the problem? The wrench sign came on right before this problem about two weeks ago. It has not appeared since then. Thank you.
Being that the wrench symbol appeared, it may indicate that you have a stored code in the ECU (computer). You can usually take your vehicle to the local auto parts store to get a free reading. This will give you a general direction to your problem. You could have a number of possible sensors that come into play with this drivability concern. One of which may be the idle position sensor, or you may just have a little excess carbon build up in your throttle body. Have the ECU checked for hard codes, that can give you more of a guide for the next step to take.
After you get the code, you can go to this website to see what it means.
