What is the shelf life of unopened quarts of hydrocarbon based oil? Thanks!

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Amanda Wetherill Holmes, Parts and Service Director and Vice President of Operations at Devon Hill BMW Norm, If it was bought 10 years ago I would not use it because the standards for motor oil for new cars have been updated. According to Exxonmobil they recommend a five year maximum shelf life depending on storage conditions. Here is a basic guideline: Base Oils, Process Oils 3 years Hydraulic Oils, Compressor Oils, General Purpose Lubricating Oils 2 years Engine Oils and Transmission Oils 3 years Industrial and Automotive Gear Oils 2 years Metal Working and Cutting Oils 1 year The following are signs of storage instability in a lubricant: * Settling out of the additives as a gel osticky liquid * Floc or haze * Precipitates/solid material * Colour change or haziness Cheers, Amanda
