How do I know if my power steering pump, on my 2001 Dodge Dakota 4.7 ltr. quad cab, is about to die?

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Amanda J. Pierce, MBA Tima, In most cases when a power steering pump is on the brink of failure, you can hear a significant "whine" when turning the wheels either direction. Sometimes this sounds is from low power steering fluid, make sure the area is clean and remove the cap on the power steering pump check the fluid level. If it is low there is a leak in the system. Repair the leak and you may solve your problem other than replacing the pump itself. AJ Pierce

Donna Burmeister, Service Manager at Classic Nissan It can make a whining noise, fluid could be burnt, have a repair shop check it.
