My daughter-in-law asked me to help her with a new car purchase. Her present car is a Jeep Grand Cherokee with 4 wheel drive. She uses this car to go to and from work about 30 miles round trip and also for the occasional family trip.
Her lease is up in September and she wants to buy her next car instead of leasing. She also wants to get better mileage than her current 13 mpg. She wants to lower her monthly payments which are now $475/month.
Her main fear is that she will not be able to drive in the snow (Syracuse, NY) without all wheel or 4 wheel drive.
We live near her and drive in the same winter weather. We have a Honda C-RV AWD and a Golf 1.8 turbo with winter tires and have no problem with either car in the snow. But, she is still wants AWD.
She will not mind getting a sedan. She has a husband (my son) and a 5 year old daughter. Most of the time she is the only one in the car. She would like the car to be able to hold 5 people.
From a womens perspective, what car would you recommend?
I recommend a SUV 4 wheel drive or AWD. I was born and raised in the snow and this is a necessity. Also SUV's are much easier to see out of and have less blind spots. Safety and Security is what your daughter needs and you need peace of mind making sure all your loved ones are taken care of. I would recommend, Ford, Toyota, or Honda.

Your daughter in law has a lot of choices. Most passenger cars and SUV's have at least 5 passenger
capability and if you stick with a 4 or 6 cylinder you will definitely get much better gas mileage. I prefer SUV or crossover for snow because they are higher off the ground and have better visibility. A new car with payments around $475.00 depending on down payment and interest would have to be a car under 30K. Some choices are any of the Subaru line, They have SUV and passenger vehicles all under 30K. Ford has Explorer and Escape Toyota has 4runner and Highlander, Nissan Murano, Honda CRV, Saturn Vue, Mazda C7 and C9.
