When tightening my gas cap I broke a piece off, didn't realize it. the car sat for 10 days while on vacation when I returned and started it the CHECK engine light came on it is yellow. It has come on before and usually requires tightening of gas cap then it goes off after 3 days. This time it didn't go off. Took to dealership they found broken piece of gas cap and told me the only way the engine light will go off is to replace a mechanism under the driver seat which controls air intake to the emission system. If I replaced it that day they would give me a 75.00 credit for labor otherwise full price 177.00. I replaced the gas cap that day it cost me 156.00 and I sat there for 3 hours, also had oil change. I am disappointed in the car design and the dealership. The car runs fine i.e. exactly the same but they told me it will effect the engine eventually. I know that within the next few weeks I will take the car back to have the device replaced I take good care of the car. Is there another alternative to repair the car? Thank you for your help.
The dealership and the car manufacture must abide by the EPA standards on repairs on emission control systems and standards for all vehicles are controlled by this government agency.
The EPA, ( Environmental Protection Agency), mandates emission controls on the EVAP Systems for all vehicles.
Not doing this repair will cause a safety issue and will cause your vehicle to not comply with emission standards set by the EPA.
