My car (a Nissan Murano) is a little over 30k miles. What scheduled service is vital and what is just a rip off?

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Amy Mattinat, Owner and Author at Auto Craftsmen Ltd Hi Sheena, Cars are machines. They need to have their fluids changed, and worn parts replaced. I read somewhere once that there were approx. 14,000 parts in a car. That is a lot of parts and pieces working together to keep you rolling down the road safe & reliably. The question of what scheduled maintenance to do, is best answered by what you need out of this car. Are you planning on keeping it for another 30K miles or even longer? If you want to keep this car, then I would advise you to do the scheduled work. Having a part replaced that isn’t broken is a rip-off. Bringing it in for service, paying for the work and then finding out no work was done, is a rip-off. But having your fluids changed, replacing the sparkplugs, filters, and some major cleaning done will only help your car run more efficiently (better gas mileage) and will help keep you from having unexpected breakdowns on the side of the road. We highly recommend preventive maintenance to our clients here at my shop. We educate them why they need to have the work down, and why it benefits them and their cars. The weather in my town has been frigid cold, (below zero for weeks) and we have not had one of our client’s cars towed-in because the car wouldn’t start in this cold, cold weather. This is an exception to the rule in my area, and I attribute all the scheduled service work to keeping my clients rolling down the road in these extreme conditions. All My Best, Amy Mattinat
