Gas pumps shut off once the gas hits the knozzle. When the gas is coming out of the pump full speed as the tank gets full the "splash back" could shut off the pump. In all actuality, you should not fill your tank all the way to the top anyway. There must be some air in the tank for the fuel system to work properly.
