The service engine light of my 2002 Ford Escape has been on for a few weeks. I have not noticed any drivability issues with the car. I took it in to an AutoZone retailer for their free diagnostic test and was advised to replace the EGR valve. I called my dealer and got an outrageous quote to fix this valve and that they do not accept outside tests. The AutoZone worker said this is a very simple repair that anyone can do. Should I try and replace it myself? How long can I go without replacing this valve?

Patty Streeter, at AskPatty.com I suggest going to an ASE Blue Seal certified repair center for another opinion, sometimes cheaper is not always better. You can locate an ASE Blue Seal Service center by going here: http://www.ase.com/bluesealsearch/locator.php
