My ac and defrosters aren't working. Today when I turned the van on it made a horrible sound, had a horrible smell, and started smoking. When I shut the defroster off it quit doing all of that and I was able to drive it. I have a 2000 Dodge caravan. What is wrong? How much will it cost to fix?

Lori Johnson, Owner and Instructor at Ladies Start Your Engines Dear Kim, The defroster turns on the a/c so that dry air is blown on the windshield to clear it. That horrible noise may be that your compressor isn't working, but the belt is still trying to spin. Without seeing the vehicle it's hard to diagnose. If it is the compressor however, they can be costly to replace. Maybe in the range of $300 or more. There's also the chance that it's just the bearing. Take it in for service to an ASE certified technician and have them diagnose the noise and the smoke and ask them to give you price. Once you know the problem you can shop around for the best deal. Lori
