Ck engine light came on my '97 Toyota Celica and found out it's a code P770 and something about the clutch in the converter. Trans. oil black and told I should get a re-manufactured transmission. Told the gears are not changing as they should, which I personally don't hear any difference, but I'm not the mechanic. Two transmission specialist told me I should get the re-manufactured transmission. What is your opinion?

Personally, i am not sure what a P770 is, but if two different mechanics have recommended it. . . it probably should be done. However, when you get involved with cars or trucks that start failing . .. it might be a good decision to take extra precaution. .. you dont' want this to become even a bigger issue . .. which will cost more $$$$$ in the long run. The consensus was: Before you go and change the transmission, try having the transmission fluid flushed first. The valve solenoids can get sticky and flushing the transmission fluid can restore proper action. If the car drives normally, just keep driving it and have the transmission flushed every 30,000 miles.     Amy Mattinat Automotive Experts LLC

I don't have enough information to give you 100% diagnosis, however if it needs to be replaced a rebuilt unit is a great option. Keep the receipt as you would with any repair in case there is a future problem.

Lori Johnson, Owner and Instructor at Ladies Start Your Engines Dear Charlotte, If you haven't felt a problem with the transmission, the first thing I would do is to have the code cleared and see if it returns. The transmission fluid should not be black, but having a transmission service sounds like a good idea. They usually change the fluid and the filter. If the code comes back, then replacing the transmission with a remanufactured one is not a bad choice. Just make sure you get a warranty with it. Lori Johnson
