How do I replace power steering fluid in a 1962 Mercedes Benz

Answers from the Automotive Experts

Patty Streeter, at AskPatty.com Cat, To completely replace the power steering fluid in your 1962 Mercedes Benz, the fluid must be drained at the power steering box or the fluid must be exchanged with a shop with a power steering fluid flush machine. To drain the fluid at the power steering box you would disconnect the hose at the lowest point on the steering gearbox. Let all of the fluid drain from the steering box. Without the vehicle running, turn the steering from lock to lock. Reconnect the power steering hose to the steering gearbox. This vehicle also has a power steering filter located in the power steering pump. It is accessed by removing the power steering pump cover. The filter is held down by a spring which is retained by a clip. Remove the clip from the threaded shaft. Remove the spring and then the filter. Install in reverse order. Refill the power steering system with Dextron 3 automatic transmission fluid or Genuine Mercedes Benz power steering fluid part # 000 989 88 03. Start the vehicle and turn the steering from lock to lock until all air is removed from the system. Let the vehicle sit for a half hour and then recheck the fluid. The fluid should not be foamy.
